Automatic Motorhome Hire In The UK For A Family

Spring is one of the best times to take a family motorhome trip in the UK. The roads are quieter than the peak summer months of July and August, campsites have space and the countryside looks its best, bluebells in woodlands, lambs in fields and long evenings that stretch into late evenings.

At Hertz Motorhome Hire, our entire fleet features automatic gearboxes and reversing cameras as standard, which makes a difference when navigating country lanes with a car full of children. If you've been putting off a motorhome trip because driving something that size feels daunting, the automatic transmission removes one of the biggest hesitations.

Why Spring Works So Well For Families

School half term in late May is the perfect time for families to take their automatic motorhome trip; it is warm enough to be comfortable outside but beats the summer rush. Campsites across England and Wales are easier to book, prices tend to be lower and you'll find popular attractions far less crowded. Spring brings longer daylight hours, giving families more flexibility with journey times and evening activities.

A Spring Itinerary: The Welsh Marches & Brecon Beacons Loop

Most family motorhome guides suggest the Lake District, Cornwall or the Scottish Highlands. This route is something different, starting from our Midlands depot, the Welsh Marches and Brecon Beacons loop covers around 300 miles over seven days, travelling through market towns, dark sky reserves, waterfalls and castles.

Day 1 – 2: Ludlow to Hay-on-Wye

Pick up your automatic motorhome and head west to Ludlow, one of England's finest medieval market towns. The food scene is remarkable here, we suggest grabbing food supplies from the market as you travel through. Spending the night at Ludlow Touring Park before a drive through Teme Valley into Hay-on-Wye. This is a famous book town, which keeps children interested and the open ground next to the River Wye is ideal for afternoon run arounds and picnics for lunch.

Day 3: Brecon Beacons National Park

Heading south into the Brecon Beacons, the Sgwd yr Eira waterfall near Ystradfellte, where you can walk behind the cascade, is the kind of experience children will enjoy and remember. Overnight at Pencelli Castle Caravan and Camping Park, which sits beside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and has excellent family facilities.

Day 4–5: Abergavenny & the Black Mountains

Abergavenny is a market town with a Thursday food market and a compact castle ruin that takes about an hour to explore. From here, the road north through Llanthony Valley is quiet and dramatic, the ruins of Llanthony Priory make a superb picnic stop and the single track lanes are more manageable in a modern automatic than they might appear on a map.

Day 6: Knighton & the Offa's Dyke Path

Knighton sits directly on Offa's Dyke, the ancient earthwork, marking the historic England/Wales border. The Offa's Dyke Centre in town is free to visit and interesting for older children. The town sits within one of the darkest sky areas in England and Wales, so if the weather cooperates, an evening stargazing session from the motorhome is a good evening activity.

Day 7: The Shropshire Hills & home

The final leg takes you back through the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with an optional stop at Ironbridge, home of the world's first iron bridge and a selection of family friendly museums. Returning to the depot with family memories to last.

Practical Tips For Family Motorhome Hire In Spring

  • Book pitches before you travel, popular Brecon Beacons sites fill quickly in half terms
  • Pack layers, spring weather in Wales & the Marches shifts quickly
  • Use the reversing camera, every Hertz motorhome comes fitted with one, it is invaluable on narrow lanes & when reversing onto pitches
  • Shop at local markets, the local food markets keep the trip feeling special
  • Allow more time than the sat-nav suggests, a 60 mile drive through country roads in a motorhome often takes longer than expected, have buffer time so the journey stays enjoyable & not rushed

Choosing The Right Motorhome For Your Family

Hertz Motorhome Hire offers 4, 5 and 6 berth motorhomes, all with automatic gearboxes and unlimited mileage. For a family of four, the 4 berth model with its rear island bed is a comfortable, well equipped choice. Families of five or six will want the 6 berth option with bunk beds, which gives children their own sleeping space and makes evenings on site considerably easier.

Every vehicle in the fleet is less than two years old and replaced annually, so reliability on remote routes is one less thing to think about.
