Explore The Dolomites – A Springtime Adventure

Springtime is one of the most rewarding times to explore the Dolomites by motorhome. The roads are quieter than summer, the valleys are full of growth and you can enjoy crisp, clear views of the peaks without it being the busiest season. At Hertz Motorhome Hire we love spring exploring because it offers longer daylight, comfortable driving temperatures and plenty things open before the height of summer.

Below is a spring itinerary that has less talked about valleys, uncrowded lakes and scenic passes that open early, keeping driving days realistic for a motorhome.

Explore The Dolomites – A Springtime Adventure

A Spring Itinerary With A Quieter Dolomites Feel (7-9 days)

Day 1 - Arrive Via South Tyrol

Instead of heading straight for headline routes, start in the Eisacktal (Isarco Valley). It’s an easy introduction to the region with local produce and calm roads. Park up at a well equipped campsite and take an afternoon stroll among vineyards, saving the bigger alpine drives for later.

Day 2 - Villnös (Val di Funes)

Spend a day exploring Val di Funes, famous for its picture perfect church and peak scenery. In spring the valley paths are ideal for low altitude walking (accessible even when higher trails still have snow). It’s a relaxed day with minimal driving, good for settling into motorhome life.

Day 3 - Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm)

Alpe di Siusi is best enjoyed with an early start. Drive to a sensible parking area and use local transport where required (seasonal rules may apply). Spring here is full of fields, big skies and alpine feelings.

Day 4 - Val d’Ega (Eggental)

Rather than focusing on busier central passes, loop through Val d’Ega and stop at Lago di Carezza (Karersee). In spring the lake’s colours are striking and walking routes are manageable. This is a great reset day, easy miles, good scenery and plenty of café stops.

Day 5 - Puster Valley To Val Comelico

From the Pulster Valley, continue east into Val Comelico (Comelico Superiore), a less visited area with a more local feel. You’ll find traditional villages, quiet roads and a slower pace, ideal for motorhomers who prefer space over hotspots.

Day 6 - The Misurina To Val d’Ansiei Corridor

Instead of the usual rush to the famous viewpoints, take a forest and lake day around the Misurina and Val d’Ansiei. The combination of water, woodland and rock faces feels fresh. If conditions suit, you’ll also be well located for short, safe walks.

Day 7 - Cadore & Lake Centro Cadore

Head towards the Cadore area, specifically Lake Centro Cadore. It’s an underappreciated base with lakeside views, gentle cycling and walking options and a calm atmosphere compared to the well known lakes. Spend the evening parked with a mountain sunset reflected on the water.

Day 8-9 - Prosecco Hills

If you’re heading back to northern Italy, consider finishing with a night or two near the Prosecco Hills. It’s a softer landscape that contrasts with the Dolomites and make an easy final leg.

Spring Motorhome Tips For The Dolomites

Spring in the mountains can change quickly, so planning for flexibility is key. Our top advice is to keep your daily mileage reasonable and build in weather buffer time especially if a high pass is temporarily closed or conditions shift overnight.

  • Pack for four seasons in one day - layers, waterproofs & proper footwear
  • Aim to arrive at campsites mid afternoon for pitch choice & time to set up

Driving & Comfort Advice

For exploring in the springtime, check local road notices and be prepared to adjust the route. Snow can linger on shaded sections even when the valleys feel like summer. A motorhome with good heating and ventilation makes a noticeable difference with warm evenings inside and cool comfort when the sun appears.

Finally, let the season set the pace. Springtime in the Dolomites isn’t about ticking off every famous pass, it’s about quieter valleys, clearer roads and amazing views when you least expect them.
