What Does Berth Mean on a Motorhome?
In motorhome terms, a berth refers to a sleeping space, a 2-berth motorhome sleeps two people, a 4-berth motorhome sleeps four, and so on. It's worth knowing, however, that berth numbers describe sleeping capacity, not living comfort. A couple hiring a 4 berth, will enjoy more space than if they'd squeezed into the smallest option.
What Size Motorhome Do You Need?
- 1 - 2 people - 2-berth | Rainbow – Compact, fuel-efficient & easy to drive
- 2 - 3 people - 3–4 berth | Voyager – Fixed double bed & flexible lounge space
- 4 people - 4-berth | Pathfinder – Ideal for families of 4 & full bathroom
- 5 - 6 people - 6-berth | Adventurer – Multiple sleep zones & generous storage
2-Berth Motorhomes: Perfect for Couples & Solo Travellers
If you're planning a trip with a companion, a 2-berth motorhome is a brilliant choice. They are compact and easy to manoeuvre, these vehicles are ideal for navigating narrow country lanes, rural campsites, and winding coastal roads.
Modern 2-berth motorhomes are cleverly designed don't let the size fool you. You'll find the essential kitchen facilities, a comfortable lounge area, and a fixed or drop down double bed, all within a vehicle that's far more agile and fuel-efficient than its larger counterparts.
Best for: Couples, solo travellers, weekend breaks & touring routes where flexibility & easy parking matter.
- Hertz Tip: Our Rainbow is a favourite for couples. It's easy to drive & well-equipped, a great introduction to motorhome travel
4-Berth Motorhomes: The Family Favourite
The 4-berth is our most popular motorhome size, and it is clear why. It has an ideal balance between space and practicality, a genuine home-from-home for small families and groups of friends.
Is a 4-berth motorhome big enough for 2 adults & 2 children?
Yes, it's the most common layout we hire to families. You'll find a fixed double bed for the adults & either drop down bunks or a convertible dinette for the children. This gives everyone defined sleeping spaces. Add in a full bathroom, a well-equipped kitchen, & storage, & the 4-berth ticks every box for a week on the road.
What size motorhome do I need for a family of 4?
In most cases, a 4-berth is perfect, it is spacious enough for comfort but manageable enough to drive and park with confidence.
Best for: Families with one or two children, groups of four adults, & longer touring holidays across the UK or Europe.
- Hertz Tip: If a couple book the Voyager 4-berth, you'll get a double bed & a lounge area, a step up in comfort
6-Berth Motorhomes: Room for Everyone
Travelling with a larger family, a multi-generational group, or a larger group of friends, this is when a 6-berth motorhome delivers the space and versatility to make it work. These are the largest vehicles in our Hertz fleet, usually offering a rear fixed double bed, a drop-down roof bed, and a convertible lounge, alongside a full kitchen and generous storage throughout.
What's the difference between a 4-berth and 6-berth motorhome?
Beyond the additional sleeping spaces, 6-berth motorhomes are larger in overall footprint, offering more worktop space, storage, & bigger space between sleeping areas. However, they require more confidence on the road and may be restricted on smaller campsites.
Can I drive a 6-berth motorhome on a standard UK driving licence?
In most cases, yes, providing your licence was obtained before 1 January 1997, or your Category B (car) licence covers vehicles up to 3,500kg. Our larger motorhomes are within this limit, but we recommend checking your specific licence entitlement before booking.
Best for: Larger families, groups of up to six, extended holidays, & those who want to spread out and travel in real comfort.
- Hertz Tip: The Adventurer is our main 6-berth, perfect for families or friend groups who want the full motorhome experience, without compromising on space
A Few Extra Things to Consider
Berth size is the starting point, but here are some other factors worth thinking about:
- Trip length: Longer trips benefit from more storage & living space
- Your route: Narrow roads, village campsites, & ferry crossings all favour smaller vehicles
- Driver experience: If you're new to motorhomes, a compact model is a more comfortable place to start
- Campsite hook-ups: Larger motorhomes may be restricted on certain sites
